1. Our Commitment
BenefitsInteractive is dedicated to ensuring that digital benefits education, plan navigation, and communication tools are accessible to everyone, including individuals with visual, auditory, motor, cognitive, and neurological disabilities.
We believe every employee, broker, and human resources professional deserves equal and unobstructed access to essential healthcare benefits information, compliance documentation, and employee benefits decision support.
2. Conformance Standards
To provide a consistent and barrier-free experience, the BenefitsInteractive platform is built and tested against the following international accessibility benchmarks:
Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).
U.S. Rehabilitation Act Section 508 electronic and information technology accessibility standards.
3. Accessibility Measures Implemented
We integrate accessibility throughout our software development lifecycle, design system tokens, component architecture, and automated test suites:
- Semantic HTML & Landmarks: Clear hierarchical structure using standard landmark elements (
<nav>,<main>,<aside>,<header>,<footer>) with distinct descriptive labels. - Form Controls: All text inputs, selects, textareas, and checkboxes feature associated
<label>tags or explicitaria-labelattributes. - Descriptive Non-Text Content: Informative images include descriptive alternative text (
alt), while decorative iconography is marked witharia-hidden="true"to prevent assistive technology noise. - ARIA Attributes: Complex interactive elements (accordions, modal dialogs, tablists, drag-and-drop sortable lists) communicate state through
aria-expanded,aria-selected, androle="tab".
4. Keyboard & Focus Navigation
Every interactive feature across the employee portal, broker console, group administration interface, and public marketing pages can be operated entirely using standard keyboard inputs:
- Logical Focus Order: Tab and arrow navigation follows a predictable reading sequence that mirrors visual layout.
- High-Visibility Focus Indicators: Interactive buttons, links, inputs, and tab triggers display distinct, high-contrast
focus-visible:ring-2indicators. - Modal Dialog Focus Trapping: Dialogs trap keyboard focus while open and restore focus to the triggering element upon closing with Escape.
5. Screen Reader Compatibility
Our interface is engineered to provide rich context to screen reading software:
- Icon-only buttons (such as edit, delete, copy, and close actions) contain descriptive accessible names.
- Asynchronous updates and live message status changes utilize appropriate ARIA live regions and role announcements.
- Tabular data (such as compliance rosters and analytics summaries) include programmatic headers with proper row and column associations.
6. Color Contrast & Visual Design
Visual elements adhere to strict contrast ratios:
- Normal Text: Standard body copy, labels, and table cells maintain at least a 4.5:1 contrast ratio against their respective background surfaces.
- Large Text & Headings: Major titles and prominent headings meet or exceed the 3:1 minimum requirement.
- Non-Color Dependency: Information, interactive states, and error alerts never rely solely on color to convey meaning, pairing color changes with iconography, text labels, or underline highlights.
7. Supported Assistive Technologies
The platform is tested for compatibility with modern browsers and screen reader combinations:
- NVDA and JAWS on modern Chromium-based browsers (Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge) and Mozilla Firefox
- Apple VoiceOver on macOS (Safari, Chrome) and iOS (Safari)
- Android TalkBack on Google Chrome
- Built-in OS screen magnification and high-contrast display modes
